Lars Mikkelsen3-765x1024He began his studies at the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. Apart from his appearance in the drama series The Killing and the film, he was also a part of Borgen III, a Danish drama series. He also played a pivotal character in the BBC drama Sherlock as a the blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American TV show House of Cards, he played the president of Russia. In 2018, he won an International Emmy Award for his performance as the president in Russia on the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in 2019. According to Mikkelsen's account the actor was taught English from his older brother by listening to Monty Python recordings and watching the comedy sketches.
