Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she was an adult due to the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry confessed that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school, but started doing it to make friends at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry began her career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California and find work as a stage actress. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in the year 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, she played a young character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. The role was selected through an audition, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
